I don't have a link but I know I have heard studies that suggest that crime rates are largely a function of demographics, i.e. how many young people are around to commit crimes. Too bad I am too apathetic on this topic to go dig one out. If it's true, then you would expect crime to drop as the baby boomers moved out of the crime-prone age range.
