The problem is that the hyperbole is a very deliberate effort to demonize the other side as a political strategy. Thus Republicans and Democrats become fascists and socialists when using the terms is at best, wrong, and at worst, juvenile. But our politics have become so obsessed with demonizing the OTHERS that it is an accepted norm. The fact that it undermines respect for differing opinions with in the rough American consensus is only bemoaned by a few. The price for the vicious zero-sum partisanship against the EVIL ENEMY is paid by all in the form of our totally bankrupt and dysfunctional legislative and executive branches.
