What is funny about that infamous Gilder duel was that one of the claims that Heinz made was that a computer that was twice as fast wasn't twice as productive especially in light of the fact that most only used them as word processors. Gilder retorted that with the advent of the Internet a computer was not simply a word processor that someone used alone in their room anymore but now had the ability to publish to millions within seconds.

Later I remember one of the Heinz fans saying that reading that conversation saved so many so much money, presumably by their not getting sucked into believing Gilder. What struck me as ironic is that it may have in fact saved people lots of money by not investing in Gilder's favorite technology companies (most turned out like the majority of tech investments)....but it only did so because the conversation was being published in real time over the Internet instead of being written on a word processor alone in some room!

If it weren't for Gilder's logic being correct about the network adding considerable value to the personal computer no one would have been saved a dime except people in some little town in Austria who happened to hear Heinz talking to himself through an open window.
