My goodness, How blunt the Wall Street Journal was

"Novell Shares Climb on CEO's ouster"

And they finally, hopefully not temporarily separated the CEO and Chairman positions. Great news.

The problems for the company however remain the same and the fix is long long overdue.

The company has never resolved its inability to develop a managerial structure that rewards innovation. Going back to digitalme, whenever someone develops an idea of merit, the minute it is recognized as having merit they take it away from the guys who developed it and hand it off to a good ole boy. As a result they never are able to market the good ideas, even when they get to be actual products like ifolder. This failure to be able to market hot products is at the core of Novell's failure as a company.

At Motorola it appears that the innovators hid an entire product from management until they could get the product out the door to avoid politics. At Novell politics is so deeply entrenched that no innovator could ever do the same thing. The structure doesn't work. The LINUX guys go off and play with their standards and keep away from anyone who might actually know how to market their products. The messmans strategy of waiting for the Netware accounts to embrace LINUX rules the day. And they are supposed to do it not because there is something great about Novell's LINUX distro but just because they are old Novell customers.

I'm afraid it doesn't work that way anymore. If Novell doesn't solve the marketing department and management problems they should just sell the company to iBM and let IBM solve the problems.
