I repeat, my friend is one of the top laser physicists in the country.

Lasers are only one possible weapon that can be used against missiles, and the physics of lasers is only one aspect of using them as a weapon. Your friend might possible serve as an authority on the physics of lasers (although to really serve as an authority we would have to hear or read him say it, and have a way to verify his credentials), but being a "laser physicist" would not make him an authority on other aspects of laser weapons, let alone non-laser weapons. He could of course be very knowledgeable about other aspects and other weapons, but so can people who are not "laser physicists".
