I'm assuming you haven't worked in IT in a big company...

From my experience, the smaller the shop, the tighter the released product - they can't afford to release anything that doesn't work as intended, one failed release could sink the company. Once they get bigger, and you get more than three people working on any one project or system, that's when the bugs sneak in.

Harking back to the original comments, on guns, climate or whatever, if you can't change it all, what's wrong with improving what you can?
Do 2mpg more if that's all you can do - for now - and then work up from there. Incremental changes work, and they're a lot easier to push through; maybe you don't like not having some big fancy all-in solution, small and steady is OK if it goes in the right direction.
