Even Isaac Newton, in between having unseemly disagreements with his fellow scientists and mathematicians, suggested that unseen phenomena was a possible explanation for gravitation.

Newton identified gravitation as the fundamental force controlling the motions of the celestial bodies. He never found its cause. To contemporaries who found the idea of attractions across empty space unintelligible, he conceded that they might prove to be caused by the impacts of unseen particles.

Humans behave oddly. So how are we sure our minds are not already invaded by invisible bad guys? Our oldest recorded books say exactly that. It explains lots of things.. including the rantings of religious fundamentalists who belong in gitmo.
