Not quite exact parallels, however. Our armies defeated their armies, and then did occupy their countries, true. But Germany had been democratic for a while before WWII. Remember that Hitler was actually elected Chancellor. Also, there was no "insurgency" in either case, which meant there was no ongoing violence once the war was over. The situations are quite different from the current one in Iraq. What's also sad is that the current state of affairs in Iraq was fairly easy to foresee, and there were those who warned us about it. Moreover, there's a good chance that even if democracy does take root in Iraq, they will eventually elect a radical Islamist government that will be a greater threat to our security than Saddam ever was. - Allen
