I would ask, though, what public purpose is being served by the NY Times publishing investigator's methods and sources?

I imagine that their interest is from the perspective of the pattern of exceeding the administration's power, a legitimate subject for media to pursue.

In this case I don't know if the excess in question was sufficient to warrant the publication of methods but that would be the call the Times is making, I expect. I don't think their attention to this pattern can be dismissed.
