Note that as in Iraq, the ideology and many of the fighters on the Communist side were also foreign.

To be the sure, the Communist ideology was foreign to the people in Malaya. But most of the fighters were home-grown!!!
Not foreigners!!!

I know this for a fact because, having been in Malaysia (formerly Malaya) myself for a number of years, I am acquainted with the history of that country.

The British created Force 136 and the MPAJA (Malayan People's Anti-Japanese Army) mainly from local people. There were relatively few foreigners. Because the Communist fighting force were mostly local Chinese they blended very well with the local populace and the British had a hard time tracking them down.

The Communists engaged mostly in guerilla warfare and, needless to say, they drew a lot from the experience of the late Chairman Mao and his Long March fighters in China.

I commend the British for having handled the situation in Malaya (before it became Malaysia in 1957) creditably well.

BTW, British diplomacy also managed to get the Sunnis and the Shia in Iraq to live in peaceful co-existence. This is a far cry from what the Americans and Israelis are doing in the Middle East.

Bush will do well to learn from the British and to stop acting as if the only opinion that matters is what he and his opine.
