Not only is SUNW's Java proprietary, it's proprietary to a hardware company. The mentality in hardware companies is much different than software houses. Hardware companies write software to sell their hardware...period. Reference AAPLs aborted decision to open up their system as soon as they realized the clone makers were going to undercut them on price (duh). Declining hardware profits panic hardware companies, and SUNW will never be able to compete with PC clones by themselves on bang/buck.

I expect this euphoria about Java's vague "open" promise will fade as developers realize they really have a choice between two proprietary systems, one with 90% market share and the other with nil. To which would you commit your precious development dollars?
