Microsoft: Trojans, Rootkits Getting Worse, NewsFactor Network: Microsoft has released a report that says rootkits still haven't become the favored weapon of hackers, but that Trojans have become a "significant and tangible threat to Windows users." Trojans are viruses that masquerade as something harmless and, once in a computer, cause problems. Rootkits are related malware that embed themselves so deeply that they often can't be detected. Redmond says that firewalls and comprehensive, up-to-date antivirus and anti-spyware software are key preventatives. Experts warn that malware creators are getting more sophisticated and, eventually, may start targeting individual applications
