RESEARCH ALERT - Gruntal starts Vans Inc

NEW YORK, Sept 23 (Reuter) - Gruntal & Co said on Tuesday it started coverage on shares
of Vans Inc, which designs and makes alternative sports footwear with a strong buy rating.

Gruntal said it expected Vans to achieve 20 to 25 percent annual earnings growth.
Gruntal said earnings growth driven by Vans' strong position in expanding alternative
sports sector, continued performance at retail, a growing teen population and
development of the company's international, apparel and snowboard boot business.
Gruntal set a 12-month price target of $24 a share.
1998 earnings estimate $0.95 a share and 1999 earnings estimate $1.15 a share.
