Taking up Erik's cudgel, are you? Well, I suppose Beckham's twister tucked in by a hair inside the post has you feeling generous. Klinsmann has his match in the Italian coach. At speed, I guess the ref might have been persuaded that his was a legitimate call? But at that stage of the match, with the Italian going over not an ankle, not a calf, not a leg, but the entire body, that is a very tough, match-terminating call to make. The Aussies deserved better than to lose that way. Gallipoli, any one?

The Americans could do worse than hire Klinsmann: he'd teach them the way football is being played these days. One hoped the over-the-top diving, the theatrics, the spin--yes, the spin--was left more to Club games, so maybe the Americans have had their influence after all. Crossfire, the spin. Or did Europe circa 1919 patent all that?
