It is a counterfeiting operation.

They will send a check for a few thousand dollars made out to you. The check will be either a very good forgery, or more likely an actual stolen check that has been doctored. Sometimes it will be an actual check from somebody who thinks they are buying an item off of eBay. You will be instructed to simply deposit and/or cash the check, keep 10% as your processing fee, and forward the balance.

When this works right, they can get you to cash two or three checks in the week or two before the whole thing comes crumbling down. Then you are left holding the bag while Mr. Kent Anderson (CEO) settles into his favorite Abuja cybercafe to check his email for more suckers.
