That is true.
The requirements for evolution are quite limited.
1) some form of reproduction.
2) some variation in the reproduction.
3) a selection.

Many things other than lifeforms evolve.
The evolution of lifeforms on this planet is particularly simple compared to the evolution of language or something. This is because there is only one path from parents to children, while other information systems have quite complex inheritence.
