Yes, but not only is it a lie, but it may be a knowing lie or alternatively a lie that convinces self. If it were true, then it is self-deceiving on two planes. For one, survival depends on defection when it is necessary, and the appearance of being altruistic. You either know this or operate that way instinctually. Women have this necessity more than others as they have to self justify in order for their young to survive, but also they have to depend on the group more. This introduces a schizoid dependency that couples with natural self-aggregation and divestment of weaker ones. Pure altruism works well as long as the basic interests of the individual are not reduced by the group. Where they are, the individual must find a way to balance. This is generally by deception or clique control. This is demonstrated artificially by the game show, Survivor. What this means is that the individual is naturally corrupted in some way by survival imperatives that seemingly run counter to higher conscience and morality and may be repressed generally or suppressed at other times. The underlying fascination of Survivor is that what it underscores archetypically that individuals in a primitive society literally ostracize, drive out and condemn to death people who do not group properly or form alliances that obey the natural developing central authority. This is seen in desert tribes, historical communism and most democracies as well. The central theme of the group authority and its aim is controlling power as a guarantee of survival.
