There was a case decided in the 5th Circuit in the last couple years on this issue that almost made it to the Supreme Court. Then AG Ashcroft made some sort of agreement that stopped it from going forward.

References to it and more about the specifics will be in some old magazines I have laying around -- I can look them up for you if you'd like. It was about a doctor in Dallas, I believe, that had his guns taken after a domestic dispute and restraining order.
