Thank you! I couldn't have said it better myself, but am still gonna say my piece.

I'm rarely seen in these Political forums (I'm too busy running a stock site and I'm so apolitical I literally have no idea what party our current President belongs to), but I just saw that on the news and knew I'd be able to find a place on SI to vent.

Making it illegal to burn the flag seems to me the antithesis of "American".

It's a multi-color rag. It represents what each of us chooses to have it represent. Burning one harms nobody. Well, unless they're draped in it at the time, which apparently would also become illegal. I choose to show the flag a certain measure of respect only because of the respect I feel for many citizens of this country to whom the flag is deeply meaningful. My respect is for them, though. Not the flag. In the same way I choose to show the Cross a certain amount of respect despite being an atheist.

In the words of Neil Peart, "Better the pride that resides in a citizen of the world, than the pride that divides when a colorful rag is unfurled."

Government meddles too much. And we waste an awful lot of money on their meddling. Don't even get me started on my "war on drugs" rant. What a humongous, meddlesome waste of resources!

It's like helmet laws. I wear a helmet when I ride a motorcycle, but don't even remotely appreciate my state government telling me I must.

Shoot, I'm so worked up about the possibility of a constitutional amendment banning the wearing or burning of cloth that's patterned a specific way that I feel like firing one up in protest.
