Why would you say that? Is it sad that we did not take another step towards totalitarism and facism? Countries that did not allow citizens to burn their flag included NAZI Germany and the Communist Soviet Union. I guess that's what American Nationalists on the right want to emulate in America. Is that called protecting freedom? I don't want to burn an American flag, but I see no reason to turn our country into a facist state to prevent everyone and anyone from burning one. Why did we fight the Cold War just to implement totalitarism American style on our soil?
