Seems to me the Republicans are perfectly capable of gridlocking Washington on their own. The Bush White House insists on going its own way; the Senate will have a new leader and a handful of presidential wannabes; and the House Republican caucus leans to the fundamentalist table-pounding brand of conservatism.

And almost no one on the Hill thinks they need Bush to get elected or re-elected in 2008.

The Democrats are way over on the edge of the sandbox trying to get some attention. If they can win the House, however, they will suddenly be front and center with hearings on what Bush has been up to the last six years. That will not be fun for anyone.

The next 2 1/2 years is a writeoff in my book, no matter how you look at it.
