Hi Amelia,

I cannot remember if it was massive volcanic activity or a meteorite, but that only raised the temperature 5 degrees. One of the theories is that this raised the water temperature enough to vaporize the vast methane hydrates (frozen methane) on the bottom of the ocean. This released huge amounts of methane gas that destroyed almost all the life in the sea and as methane is 20 times more a greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide raised the air temperature another 5 degrees. So 10 degrees.

Life was wiped of the earth many times over the last 3.5 billion years by huge meteorites hitting the earth which caused huge fireballs that engulfed the entire earth. But life always popped right back. Well, after millions of years-lol.
