OT: Koan, if you want to take this further, do some research on the Straussian background of the er, um, “brain trust” around Bush. Most of his closest advisers either studied with Leo Strauss at the University of Chicago or were heavily influenced by his ideas. One of his basic tenets is that it is necessary, indeed vital, for elites to lie to the unwashed masses for their own good. Several key questions Strauss did not address satisfactorily include whose good is really being served by the lies, and how to determine who makes up the lying elite. The reason he was unable to address them is that his entire approach is untenable. LC
