I don't remember the details offhand, but I was quite surprised at the low limits on both contributions and spending in Vermont. I think the most that could be spent on the campaign for governor was something like $300,000. Makes it tough for a challenger!

Personally, I think that term limits might be a better way to approach any problems of influence peddling. These politicians who get entrenched in office just keep gaining power and those who support them see the payoffs on their "investments" over a longer term.

The playing field would be more level for newcomers to take a turn in office and they would not need as much money to challenge a powerful incumbent.

Just some random thoughts. There is always more than one way to skin a cat, assuming, arguendo that the cat needs to be skinned in the first place!<g>
