AMERICAN CUSTOM COMP - Powerhouse Western Digital Joins Iomega In Giving Sole-source Connector

Market News Publishing, Tuesday, September 23, 1997 at 15:29

Number-two Drive Maker Hands Decisive Victory to Young
California Hi-Tech Supplier; Investors Begin to Take Notice
of American Custom Components

Continuing to stun competing disk-drive industry suppliers,
American Custom Components Tuesday announced that
number-two disk-drive behemoth Western Digital has
chosen American Custom Components to be the sole-source supplier of
test connectors for its high-end 3-1/2 inch hard disk-drive.
This decisive victory follows the September 18 decision by
Iomega Corp. to name American Custom Components as the
sole-source supplier of connectors for the popular JAZ1 and
much-awaited JAZ2 disk drives.
American Custom Components (American) is scheduling production
capacity of up to one million connector units to meet potential
demand from Rochester, Minn.-based Western Digital.
In explaining this impressive victory, and American's
lengthening lead in its battle with old-line parts suppliers,
industry analysts point to American's lethal combination of
proprietary design applications and its ability to go from design to
production in a devastating 2-1/2 week time frame. No other
manufacturer could respond to Western Digital's needs at this
blistering pace.
"No one can match our capabilities in specialty connector
manufacturing -- it's just that simple," stated a triumphant Tony
Walk, American's founder and chief executive officer. American has
used its formidable patent-winning design elements and unique "fast
response" development methods to capture a growing dominance in the
high-margin state-of-the-art custom parts field while its large
billion-dollar competitors have focused on large-volume
lower-margin commodity-type components.
American's other computer products customers include Seagate,
Compaq, IBM, Maxtor, and Micropolis.
American is using its impressive success in disk-drive
components to fuel its participation in exciting new products such
as a revolutionary new electronic retail shelf price-tag system; a
cell phone recharger; critical performance components for the U.S.
Government's TOW missile system; and a new credit card-activated gas
pump -- all containing American's patented design elements.
One of Southern California's rising young technology stars,
American Custom Components is a rapidly growing designer and
manufacturer of specialty components that offers technology-based
industries a complete program including rapid design, engineering,
tooling, molding and assembly services.
