I don't know,
The question is not actually relevant. Certainly somewhere between a singularity and large fireball is a gumball sized stage.

The mathmatics near a singularity is a lot like trying to find the prettiest fractal in a Mandelbrot series. The origin is deduced much the same way as the area under a curve is deduced in calculus. You can't actually add up the individual infitesimal areas, but you can take the limit as they approach zero.

Was there space around the Gumball?
ALso irrelevant. Anything "around" the Gumball is outside the universe. Since the universe is expanding it seems to imply that it is expanding into something, but that something is likewise, outside the universe.

These questions would be interesting to know, but they don't actally address the question of the beginning of space, and therefore the beginning of time.
