six month assessment of TGEN

(Market Cap = $23M)

INTRO Here's my semi-annual exercise to see if I remember why I won the stocks I own. I post it in case it helps others too.

Targeted Genetics uses gene therapy to convince the body to heal itself. They are currently working on arthritis and AIDS. The company has been so strapped and had a few clinical trial failures, that the product pipeline has shrunk down to a too narrow width. If they succeed with the arthritis treatment they may end up in a battle with Amgen, which claims some patent rights. If they succeed against AIDS, it will first be as part of a non-profit effort. The medical aspect of the successes will be significant and known world-wide, but the financial impact may never get me back above water on this one. It is highly speculative and the recent reverse stock split has had the opposite effect than they expected. That ain't good. Still, maybe they will succeed and maybe the company won't get bought out or run out of cash.

It ain't dead yet. The company struggles on. Here we are halfway through 2006 and I originally thought they'd be to market back in 2005. They have years to go before they begin to generate revenues from their treatments. The treatments look good, but I don't expect the company, and definitely not the stock, to survive. I continue to hold because I can be wrong, they could do wonders for AIDS and arthritis, and because selling wouldn't generate enough funds to buy anything else. Rats.

DISCLAIMER LTBH since 2000 when I was convinced that they would succeed by 2005. Oh well.
