A couple of years ago, I read an article that claimed that all that was necessary for a producer to slap a "free range" label on chickens was cut a small hole (1'x 1') in the coop, giving the thousands of chickens therein the theoretical opportunity to range free. I have no idea where I read it, or if it is true, but it wouldn't surprise me.
