First, Bush was the one that put the terrorists on notice that financial records would be followed.

on September 24, 2001: "We've established a foreign terrorist asset tracking center at the Department of the Treasury to identify and investigate the financial infrastructure of the international terrorist networks. It will bring together representatives of the intelligence, law enforcement and financial regulatory agencies to accomplish two goals: to follow the money as a trail to the terrorists, to follow their money so we can find out where they are; and to freeze the money to disrupt their actions."

Included in the over $6 trillion dollars transferred and recorded by Swift are transactions made by Americans. Collecting records on Americans without a warrant is illegal search and seizure.

Bush is responsible for putting the terrorists on notice regarding financial transactions, not the press.

What the press was noting was that Bush was spying on American's financial transactions. That is news that folks need to know. Add that to the data collected on Americans telephone calls and emails, and what you have is a violation of the right to privacy and the 4th amendment.

I have no problem with the government monitoring calls, emails and financial transactions of the terrorists. I do have a problem with the collection of records of ordinary...and some not so ordinary...Americans. Bush violates the law when he spies on Americans.
