We agree on quite a lot then, Jim. By "right" I was referring to the common positions from conservative politicians and commentators, who would not agree with what you and I supported in our posts. Indeed, they dine out on mobilizing their base with emotional appeals to folks who would just as soon see us lynched for even mentioning such heresy.

;<)

I take issue with the idea that some things I see as fundamental rights and liberties should be left to states and communities to enforce arbitrarily as they see fit. That just leaves us with 50 or thousands of local tyrannies of the majority. Local communities should not have the right to decide what programming comes from national broadcasters and travels through local cables to local residents, for example. They shouldn't control what people order from national vendors and have delivered. I wouldn't even let them go beyond loose limits on regulating commerce within their own local area.

We wouldn't let them make racial or gender decisions about who should run a business or run for office in their town - discrimination violates our national principles now. We don't let them allow 100mph speed limits if they feel like it, or ignoring helmet and seatbelt laws, LOL. I have never understood why those same local communities should be able to weave their own standards for public speech and performances. That freedom of expression and action is a right for all US citizens. Let the free market sort out what is consumed or not in a given locale.

But once again I am wandering too far afield....
