Democracy demands that the religiously motivated translate their concerns into universal, rather than religion-specific, values.

Very well put. Almost Kennedy-esque (of course I mean JFK.) I wonder whether he writes his own speeches?

Reason why I wonder -- JFK certainly talked pretty -- but when the rubber hit the road his judgment wasn't as good as his rhetoric.

Earlier presidents, e.g., Lincoln, Jefferson, Adams, Washington -- the greats -- wrote their own speeches. When you voted for a man because you liked the way he spoke, what you saw was what you got.

Now, you're voting for the speechwriter, who usually is a blithering idiot in real life but talks pretty.

I guess the last presidents who wrote their own speeches in my own lifetime -- who? Eisenhower? Truman? None in recent memory.

Anyway, back to Obama. If he writes his own speeches . . . . very interesting.
