I think that what occurred between the initial expression of distress and the "extreme" you cited is key.

Had the original expression of distress not been met with such a negative barrage, particularly a barrage that inferred and took umbrage regarding the broader "war and the administration" when that was not necessarily implied, then the subsequent extreme would not have been provoked.

Some people are inherently extremists. Other people aren't, but most of us can escalate into extreme language by, er, overstimulation. These things spiral. You can't blame the resulting extreme expression solely on the writer of that expression, IMO.
