Nokia trying to steal Q's girlfriend, Korea, in the WiBRO/WiMAX space:

Intel has recently left the wireless non-WiMAX space.
With a Samsung supplied WiMAX network going live in Michigan in 2007, it seems likely that there will be another round of trouble.

But Q has a 4G ace in the hole--Flarion. And 4G's licensing scheme is what the latest hubbub may really be all about because it looks like Q has a good chunk of 4G by the hair. The Intel/Nokia/Samsung WiMAX Guild which is in gestation has a real problem: spectrum. If WiMAX networks are so fragile, they'll be seriously problematical in a highly populated environment [like happened in Korea with Hanbro, who gave its network back].
A much pacified Orlowski recognizes, without saying so, that Q's smarmy army of nutballs and crazies may have been onto something, heh, heh:

Bingo! The "aha!" moment just happened for me: (1) WiMAX won't fly, or at least not very easily; (2) Q has 4G if not nailed, very close to nailed; (3) all upgrades to 3G go through Q, and; (4) as stated in the Register, carriers, not equipment manufacturers are now calling the shots. All this is very, very favorable for Q's future. Hence, the tactic is to fight it tooth-and-nail now, before it becomes the 800 lb. gorilla of telecomm.
Nokia is literally fighting for its future. |
