Superman is an American creation and a big part of the tone of the comics revolved around that particular phrase.

That's true. But there's no reason he can't become more international given that the market is international. The market for Superman comic books wasn't international. Had it been, the folks making money off of them might have framed him differently.

International box office is important to movie producers and a powerful motivator. I understand how nostalgia might make the change a disappointment to some Americans who want Superman to remain their guy, but I don't see how it's inherently un-American for the producers to cater to the international box office, merely mercenary.
