To my mind, the most glaring aspect of the NYT's running the SWIFT story, and one that I have not seen discussed elsewhere, is that essentially, by printing the story, the NYT called the POTUS out for lying.

Despite the white-hot rhetoric to the contrary, I do not believe the NYT would knowingly print any story that would cause harm to the US; they certainly kept GWB's latest foray into Baghdad secret until afterwards. And the weekend travelogue on Cheney and Rumsfeld's summer homes, which so many of the more rabid bloggers insisted was an invitation to terrorist assassination, was printed with the permission of both men featured.

Since the POTUS asked the NYT not to run a story that he insisted was a state secret, Keller basically demonstrated that he and the editors simply did not believe the POTUS.

I think this implied snub is what has caused the worst of the vituperation towards the NYT from the Right, especially from the more politically oriented.
