They picked those guys up with no real "proof" of anything they did and that's why they don't want to take them in front of real juries.

I really can't say why they were picked up because I wasn't in Afghanistan.

But if they are like the average detainee in Iraq, they were detained and HELD LONG TERM because information had been developed that justified it. Either they were at the location of a meeting where cell leaders where detained, or we developed other information on them.

Let me tell about all the people WE HAVEN'T DETAINED. When a raid goes down, there are normally women located attending to the needs of the insurgents holding the meeting. Aside from directly associating with the illegal combatants as logistical support, they are almost certainly knowledgable about their activities and operations. Furthermore, ask the guys who go on these raids how many times they find the women concealing stuff on their person (underwear, bras, etc).

We SELDOM arrest women, explicitly because of the tribal outrage that often accompanies such a detention. But THEY are often just as critical to the communications and operational functions as any of the men.

This is the nature of a insurgency versus a "conventional" war.. you never know who the combatants are and everyone obviously says they are innocent, if only because they know that admitting their participation might get them a rope around their neck or a bullet through the head from the Iraqi government.
