I hope we will be able to avert it, as many ways to ward off destructive asteroids have been developed in theory."

And your point? That we have a "theoretical" method of preventing asteroids from strking the planet equates to possessing a developed and tested means of doing so?

Hell, we have plenty of "theoretical" plans to halt global warming, one of which I've discussed extensively.

What do you want to do.. wait until the last minute to turn theory into capability and pray to all of your gods that it works the first time it's attempted?

This is the "Deep Impact/Armageddon" approach... I'm talking about actually developing a system, testing it out on an asteroid such as the one that just passed us by and seeing if its even feasible. And if it doesn't work, then "tweak" the process to the point that it does and we have confidence in our ability to defend our planet.
