International box office is important to movie producers and a powerful motivator. I understand how nostalgia might make the change a disappointment to some Americans who want Superman to remain their guy, but I don't see how it's inherently un-American for the producers to cater to the international box office, merely mercenary.

They couldn't have made two versions? One for international distribution, with the character saying, "truth, justice and all that stuff," and the one for US distribution saying "truth, justice and the American way."

Nah. That would be too easy. Besides, the producers of the film couldn't get their point across that they disapprove of a character saying "truth, justice and the American way."
