Ya know – your asking about where I’m taking my youngest skiing this year is an interesting question. He’s been going to a private school in Chicago and acing the program, which happens to cost 20 grand a year. The school is in excess of 90% white and though excellent hardly reflects the real world. In contrast to years past Chicago now has some amazing high schools that are as academically rigorous as where he’s been going and I’d much prefer him to go to a school as good as the one he’s been attending, except free and only 38% white. Acceptance to this school is difficult. They evaluate you on a 1000 point system. Grades are 300 points, a national test is 300 points a high school specific test is 300 points and you guessed it, attendance is 100 points. If his total is 991 or above he’s a shoe in – that’s how good the school is and only one's 7th grade academic record (which is what he’ll be) and attendance matter. So I’m not taking him out of school this year to go skiing. That leaves the big holidays which we’ll probably do once next winter, but it isn’t the same. Then again there’s always 8th grade – or maybe we should go to Portillo next month - - - (nah).
