Michael,

No company whether small or large, well or badly managed is immune from producing stupid mistakes. Remember IBM in the mid 80s trying to create the next standard in PC bus architecture with its proprietary 32 bit MicroChannel Architecture. Who else with the exception of MITAC jumped on the MCA bandwagon? How about IBM trying to compete with Microsoft Windows with its OS/2. Sometimes I can't figure IBM out - just let OS/2 die once and for all (in truly unbelievable management direction IBM is working on the next release of OS/2). Go figure.

Compaq IMO is so huge of PC company that it tries to cater to every single market segment. Just look at their PC product line. Is a dizzying 131 models really necessary? I got lost trying to differentiate between the various models. The Panasonic/Mashushita PD-CD optical/CD device is offered as an *OPTION* in over half of the models. Don't ask me why because the PD-CD, which is now over a year and a half old since marketplace introduction, has sold very poorly. Do you remember when Compaq came out with its own line of laser printers in order to compete with Hewlett Packard? Again, very poor sales led Compaq to drop its laser printer line in less than a one year span.

Compaq will treat the LS120 just like it has treated the PD-CD. It will not agreesively push it. Compaq just won't spend the massive advertising dollars necessary to compete head to head with Iomega in trying to create the next megafloppy standard. So far, only 3M/Imation has done any print advertising regarding the LS120 disk media. Where are the ads for the LS120 drives themselves. Haven't seen one yet - have you? Remember Compaq makes the majority of revenues on complete PC systems. The company could care less about pushing a $200 part that is techically weak. The LS120 only offering is backward compatibility. Which IMO just doesn't matter anymore. Trakker hit the nail on the head when he said computer users dropped the 8" floppy in favor of the 5.25" then dropped the 5.25" in favor of the 3.5". Yes, it didn't happen overnight but it took less than two years for the majority of people to switch from 5.25" to 3.5" ever since Sony introduced the first 3.5" floppy drive back in `85.

regards,
Hyun
