Actually, studies have been done that prove just the opposite, that there's NO correlation!

As a former corporate toiler, I know the executive compensation of the companies I worked for were set by the board of directors, and weren't linked to performance. The CEO's of my companies sat on the boards of the CEO's that sat on THEIR boards. This led to a brotherhood of mutual back-scratching as far as compensation.
