"The message is that only once we've given up on the current approach can we begin to solve the problem."

This whole GW discussion frustrates me.

Has anybody even defined the problem? If reducing CO2 is the answer, then we need to find out what the limits and the goals are. How much CO2 is in the atmosphere? How much is "too much?" What are the contributors to CO2 emissions, and what percentage of the problem are they?

I've read that using a lawn mower for an hour creates as much CO2 as driving a modern vehicle from Oklahoma City to Dallas(a four hour drive). If that's the case, instead of buying hybrid vehicles, we should all stop mowing our lawns. How much CO2 is produced in burning a cord of firewood? How many cords of wood are consumed in a 20,000 acre forest fire? How many hybrid vehicle miles will have to be driven to save the equivalent of one medium sized forest fire?

You can't solve a "problem" until you actually define the problem. Little feel-good things like riding your bicycle two miles to work every day won't make any impact at all. And Gore's suggestion to have a big feel-good demonstration won't save anything either.

I see a lot of hand-wringing, and hear people saying "I care, so that means I'm helping, and it also makes me a better person than someone who doesn't care," but I don't see anything related to actually defining the problem, much less anything that will make any practical difference.

Chicken Littles don't help anything.
