< I've never seen independent scientists make these kind of statements>

They don't, that's all hyperbole. :)

Actually I was (mis)speaking(?) of the downside of the scientific method... those "quotes" are the kinds of attitudes if not outright statements used by companies (and their 'scientists & specialists') to justify dumping stuff in rivers, etc.... it's all fine if there is no proof otherwise. In healthcare it's even worse among many people I know.. they actually don't worry too much about lifestyle cause they think medical science will "have a pill for that" before it becomes an issue for them.

OTOH, those examples are the result of having to use science prove something harmful instead of using the old head. We have many essentially dead rivers and lakes right now, where are the scientists showing future effect?? It's implied that if it was a problem scientists would be able to prove it.... and IMHO they've helped cultivate that.

An interesting extension is that society (and even many scientists) believe that if something ISNT scientifically proven, it's false. Interstingly that is exactly the way society is treating pollution. I mean should you really have to wait for some mechanistic proof (ie. people falling over) that we should shoot for zero emission auto's?
