Perhaps the common thread in these situations is that the precise statements made by science almost invariably apply to simplified systems. The scientific method involves breaking systems down into small pieces that can be studied and understood. We then hope construct an understanding of the complete system by putting together the pieces of understanding that we've achieved. This is not always feasible. One reason is that there are probably pieces that got missed out. Another is that changes in scale and complexity may require different kinds of explanations. Another is that the science may be wrong (it's just a matter of degree; someone said "All models are wrong. Some models are useful." and science is all about models.)

Systems involving living things are extremely complex, and when you put intelligence into the mix, as in the social sphere, all bets are off.
