The challenge is convincing people they must do "something" with no proof that any amount of "somethings" will have a tangible impact on this huge problem that can't be clearly and comprehensively defined. Now if everyone wants to recycle and do their little bit, that will probably work.

But if you move to the next step and people are being asked to give up their cars and suburban lifestyle and return to some kind of urban austerity and crowds for the sake of saving civilization, I don't think that will sell.

Gore's appeal ran to a fraction over 50% of the popular vote six years ago. Today I believe he polls much lower. So how we get from minority views to a majority consensus for action when the science and the scenario for saving the planet is so squishy.....I just don't see it working in the heartland. JMHO.
