Nokia signed the deal with Qualcomm in 1992,

No.

The Nokia WCDMA deal was in the early 2000s, and evidently is good only though 4/07. The CDMA deal was in fact signed much earlier; it doesn't really matter any more since NOK has essentially withdrawn from the CDMA market.

How NOK muscled Q into such a short term WCDMA deal, we'll never know, but I'm relatively certain it was NOK's idea as it gives it the leverage to renegotiate as the ramp up begins. On the other hand, Q might have gone along with the notion because it knows its IPR portfolio post-expiration of the heart and soul 1992 patents is sufficiently essential such that it can prevail in the renegotiation.

On the other other hand, vbg, why bother with giving NOK the option to renegotiate if the post-1992 IPR is so good?

We'll see.

I'd surely like to hear from authorative source on this issue: are the post-"heart and soul" patents equally "esential" and strong as the original ones? I surely don't have a basis for commenting on the issue, and it makes a huge difference to my investment strategy.
