Robert: Will slot 1 fly? It seems we have to wait for some benchmarks of the two types to see what will happen.
Do not forget the microchannel was supposed to be a new departure that would allow IBM to be the pied piper of byteland. IBM got bit instead.
If the socket model works as well as Intels, then look for a dual market situation. I am not sure in Intel will be able to force their way into a market departure like that. And dual socket motherboards will emerge. Intel will match slot 1 stuff with chip sets and will sell none until they are ready. At which time the competitore must buy
them and make workalikes before they can match them in an acceptable manner. I think AMD has caught up to Intel, and the only advantage Intel will have is to hit the ground running.

Intel has not done as well as you think, AMD is selling all the chips it can make and Intel has a fire break price structure to deny them share which costs $20 for each $1 they deny to AMD. Already there is a demand for the AMD chips in preference to Intel in knowledgeable circles. If AMD does a "hungarian" move. (They say the Hungarians are so smart as entrepreneurs they can enter a revolving door behind you and come out ahead of you???) and exits ahead of Intel, we will see funny things happening to Intel stock. The MMX was a last gasp and it had to be made open to fly. So the slot 1 is not such a sure thing as you may feel.
