"There is a big school of thought at home and abroad that the Iraq invasion was unnecessary and founded on mistaken premises. Perversely, if Bush succeeds in his aims, it could still have a desirable result."

And I'm part of that school. I thought it was a mistake to invade Iraq at the time. But, once the "shock and awe" was underway, what could be done? We were there, and we'd committed ourselves. If the prez at that point decided it was a mistake after all, what should he do? Say, "oops, sorry!" and pull everthing out of the destroyed country?

We as a nation are committed to a "free" Iraq. We certainly can't just leave and turn it over to the minority Sunis to create a new, and even more hostile regime.

"Imagine if Bush actually wanted to invade Iran now. How many people would believe and follow him, a sizeable phone booth's worth?"

And there's the pity of the situation. Iran, N Korea, Syria, and Somolia. All are terrific threats to world stability, and we can do nothing. Unless Russia and the EU step up to the plate, things will continue to foment. It really IS a dangerous world.
