albert, RE: <schedule for k6+ release>

Its supposed to be formally announced at Microprocessor Forum 10/14 to 10/16.

anandtech.com says there might be both a 0.35 micron K6-266 and a 0.25 micron K6-266. I think the 0.35 um 266 could arrive in October, but not sure if its a K6+ or not, but Anand says the K6-300 will be 0.25 um process and arrive early '98 when Deschutes is announced. IMHO AMD is trying like hell to get a 300 MHz K6+ out before Deschutes is available. According to Tom's Hardware Guide (Intel Roadmap) the 400 MHz Deschutes will not arrive until at least April. Between January and March Intel will deliver a 333 MHz Pentium II, but this is really a brain-damaged chip because the 5x clock multiplier (66 MHz bus, 333 MHz cpu) is just too high to get any real performance increase. My guess is Intel will release it the same day as AMD releases the K6plus-300, just so they have bragging rights to the highest clock rate, but K6plus-300 will be faster. If AMD gets the K6plus-300 out before 1998, though, Intel won't even have this lame answer to it.

BTW, theres a pretty good change the Deschutes 400 will even be slower than the AMD K6plus-300 on Windows 95 because its based on the Pentium Pro, NOT the Pentium II. The Pentium Pro is notoriously slow at legacy 16-bit code in Windows 95.
