The Vietnam War was filled with atrocities. Some entire programs were big atrocities. Dropping Agent Orange for instance. Dropping napalm. Declaring free fire zones. Burning down hootches. Phoenix Program. Not to mention My Lai massacre and others like it.

So why was combat hero John Kerry a "traitor" simply for telling the truth? By then the war was completely unwinnable anyway. Even conservatives admitted this. Nixon just kept dragging it on to get out "with dignity". Which really meant dropping more bombs on that little country than in all of WWII as we withdrew. Today, the GOP would call that "cutting and running". After something like 2,000,000 people were killed, including 55,000 Americans.

And why were we there in the first place? It had almost nothing to do with our strategic interests and weakened us greatly. Out military was decimated for a decade after that. Just like it will be after Bush's Iraq fiasco.
